Be actively involved in the project you're working on, try to stay updated on your project, ask for your next task before it's handed out to you and also try to be an active contributor to your team even if it's not necessarily in the scope of your project cause it'll only help add to your bucket of knowledge. One cannot underestimate the necessity for safety protocols. Every failure or incident that I have responded to or observed occurred as the result of someone taking a short cut. I have observed this on multiple continents on land and offshore. Respect the need to safety protocols. If you don't understand the need for such protocols, ask. If they still don't make sense, ask someone else. If you still can't (or won't) appreciate the safety requirement, consider a job where you will not risk other peoples lives or the environment. That may sound harsh, but it is just as important to be enthusiastic about safety as it is to be enthusiastic about the technical financial opportunities.
