I started college knowing I wanted to do engineering and, early on, I realized structural was my jam. A good foundation (pun intended) for your structural engineering education is paramount. An education rooted (another pun!) in mathematics and physics goes a long way in supporting your success throughout engineering. If you don't enjoy that, engineering may not be for you. However, soft skills often get overlooked. How do you get more work as an engineer or engineering firm? By communicating your skills to potential customers. Without public speaking, technical writing, and similar communication skills, your engineering skills may not be put to the best use. Seek opportunities to explore and practice these skills early and often.

2 Choose a degree

To become a professional structural engineer, you need to have at least a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field. A civil engineering degree will cover the general aspects of engineering, such as design, analysis, ethics, and management, as well as the specific sub-disciplines of civil engineering, such as structural, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation engineering. You can also choose to specialize in structural engineering by taking electives, joining a research project, or participating in a co-op or internship program.

3 Gain experience

While studying for your degree, you should also look for opportunities to gain practical experience in structural engineering.
