After learning the basics and perphaps having done a certification, the most important thing is to do a real challenging project with your BI tool suite. Ideally, you have project on the job, or in some community. If not invent a project. Can be anything: e.g. I want to simulate and visualize some option trading type (e.g. butterfly spread), based on real data. Work it out up to the point where it is presentable. Make a blog about your progress as showcase. In this manner, you demonstrate that you can do real-world projects. And this means that you are able to apply the features that are necessary for your project. This is way more tangible than just showing a certificate.
