To some extent you can simplify this to a few key items... as a starting point. Know the data being used Know the purpose Understand the legal basis Know where it is Know how it is protected Know when and how it is destroyed And ultimately, check that your organisation, and only your organisation, is making decisions about how the data is processed. There is obviously a lot more to a proper risk assessment, taking into account child rights, educational functionality, other aspects of law (biometrics, etc.) and being able to explain this in a simple model for your data subjects (staff, children and parents).

The need for consent varies by location. Within the UK, a vast proportion of personal data is not processed using the lawful basis of consent. How could it be? What if a child withdraws consent to be in a behaviour management system or even used with the exam boards? Public Task is the more common approach, but you still have to be transparent about this or that there are no Rights to manage. The Right of Access (Subject Access Request—SAR) is frequently used in UK schools. The Right to Object and the Right to Rectification are not absolutes, but they do require the school to consider and explain its findings to the requestor. Other laws may also be relevant. The Protections of Freedoms Act 2012 deals with biometrics, for example.
