I recently got a call from a Producer who doesn't do much of stock footage based edits he mentioned. He was in a state of panic. He had used certain stock footage in an edit form a site which takes 3 days to on-board a subscriber. The client woke up at the last minute (as usual) and demanded the footage needed to be purchased overnight. To avoid such situations. Always pick footage only from platforms and sites that you are sure will work within your budgets for the final edit. See that you are capable of buying the rights and the usage is well within the needs you have proposed to the client. Remember most stock footage is single use and licenses aren't meant to be "download and use as you please". It's always better to shoot if you can!

I verify that the footage comes with a clear license, confirm it covers my intended usage, and keep all documentation of the purchase and license terms.

Even the greenest of video professionals know to use reputable stock services for use in their videos. Knowing the reach of your communication can help with licensing issues as well. If you think you're doing it legally, always check twice.

Understand the License Type – Different stock footage comes with various licenses (royalty-free, rights-managed, editorial use only, etc.). Ensure the license aligns with your project's intended use. Check for Usage Restrictions – Some licenses restrict use in commercial projects, advertisements, or sensitive topics. Avoid Altering Footage Without Permission – Some licenses prohibit modifications such as color grading, cropping, or overlaying text. Credit Where Required. Certain stock footage requires attribution to the creator. Use Exclusively Licensed Footage for Sensitive Content. If your project covers controversial or political topics, ensure the license allows usage in such contexts. Consult a Legal Professional When in Doubt.
