To build a high-performing team, it is essential to first understand 3 key things 1. Your team's aspirations and goals 2. Your team's strengths and areas where they might need support 3. Your team's interpersonal comfort We often ignore these factors by saying that they would come along/get built as a team traverses through the engagement. For me, building a team is all about recruiting the right staff. First off they need to have the right attitude. You can teach skills and know-how but teaching attitude - good luck! And then secondly, it's how its individual players 'fit' into the team. If everyone can bring a different vibe, different skills and their own personality to the team then that's where the magic happens.

As a newer leader at an institution, I have experienced staff turnover as I implemented new policies and procedures over the past two years. At first, I was discouraged, knowing I had long-time team members who wanted to leave and overwhelmed by losing their institutional knowledge; however, as I hired for positions, I found the opportunity of adding team members who can bring new ideas and better advance future goals as an exciting and refreshing process. Search processes and interviewing can be time-consuming, but the ability to add staff that can introduce new ideas and look with fresh eyes at situations can be a needed change for the betterment of the department or institution.

I believe in creating a trusting and inclusive environment for the team. Empowering team members to excel in their roles and take on increased responsibilities over time. Recognizing and celebrating achievements helps to foster a positive team culture and motivates team members to continue delivering their best. Working closely with team members to identify their career aspirations and offering clear pathways for advancement helps to promote loyalty and retention among high-performing team members.

This is the biggest deflater of people. I have had the wind knocked out of my sails a number of times because of not being empowered to get things done. Give people the resources, support them, and let them make mistake and learn from them. While I was in school taking classes on marketing I was empowered by the CEO to write a marketing plan. I had no real world experience back then, but he believed in me. Support your team, empower them to try things, fail, and learn. The KEY is to make sure they know you have their back and full support.

I find it really important for my team to call me by my first name. I need my team to feel comfortable bringing their ideas to me and to feel comfortable disagreeing with me or questioning my ideas. It’s scary to disagree with “Dr Novatt.” It’s easier to disagree with “Jackie.” I tell my team members to call me Jackie, and I tell them why. This really does empower them to bring their ideas and thoughts forward, which definitely makes our work better.

Avoid the trap of micromanaging your team, especially if they are new to the role. A coaching approach works better. However there maybe times when clear directions are needed depending on the importance of the task in question. The overall approach should be flexible. Celebrate early success but learn from ideas that didn’t work in an open way without a “blame culture”.

We must empower our team by providing them with the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive and excel in their roles. I believe, it's crucial to foster open communication and create a culture of trust where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns. We must encourage autonomy by delegating tasks and granting decision-making authority, allowing individuals to take ownership of their work. In addition, we must provide opportunities for growth and development through training, mentorship, and constructive feedback. Recognize and celebrate achievements to boost morale and motivation is equally significant. Additionally, we must ensure that each team member's contributions are valued and acknowledged.

Staff turnover in academia is a challenge, you can only build a high-performing team if there is mutual commitment and trust.

It's an old saying, but you can't improve what you don't measure. Understanding where my team spends their time is such a valuable tool to learn how we can get the best out of everyone. The biggest detractor from performance is wasted time. Implementing tools and services that help you automate or simplify certain processes, so your people can spend their time doing what they do best, goes a long way.

Establishing goals and tracking mechanisms are the key to effective monitoring of work progress. Regardless of the technological means used, monitoring tools should be geared to provide feedback on the development of activities and periodically highlight good practices and lessons learned.

I think continuous monitoring might make them feel that they are being micro-managed.I don't mean that they shouldn't be monitored at all,but not too much.It's important to make them understand the mission and the vision and let them do things in their own way. Once, they do that, you never know what opportunities can arise from the same. They might fail sometimes and that's how they learn. In the process, they understand that they are being that space to grow as a professional which is what is important for everyone.

Higher education is merely the "sector" the same approach used to create an effective team would apply here. The competence outside of management would be quality assurance. QA addresses all the requisite management skills necessary for creating an effective higher education management team.

At its essence, a high performing team has a high performing leader - one who understands the union of SMART KPIs, individually connecting with every team member and their unique motivations, training that is time + process efficient and troubleshooting that is quick, nonjudgmental and feedback focused. Don’t let anyone else stifle them just because it’s the easier thing to do — and never fall for the trap of shrugging them off yourself. Protect their inquisitive nature. A culture of honest reflexivity is an essential component of a high performing team.
