In my experience all relationship breakdowns at work boil down to one thing, poor communication. Establish what the problem is, you feel like you're struggling to communicate with your boss, do they share that view? Why not write a list of bullet points about where you think your going wrong and talk to them about strategies for improvement. Be prepared that they may not think there's a problem. They may just have a more direct/blunt style. If you're to succeed you'll need to understand each other and adjust your styles to meet in the middle. Be clear about what you want and outline shared goals so they get on board.

Communication is always key. Sometimes, it can be difficult communicating with others, usually because of certain circumstances. My boss is someone who always has a lot on his plate, so he is always busy and does not like to be disturbed especially when stressed. Usually, depending on what I need to communicate, I choose to send an email for less urgent matters and text message him for more urgent matters that require his attention when he is absent. I always look for times he is more relaxed and in a good mood to communicate other matters.

During the conversation, you need to listen and respond effectively. Pay attention to what your boss is saying, and show that you are engaged and interested by using verbal and non-verbal cues.
