For a food product launch to succeed, the R&D and production teams need to work closely together from the beginning of the project. R&D creates the recipe, while production ensures it can be made easily and at large scale. Both teams test the product to check its quality and make sure it stays consistent. They must work together to fix any problems that comes up during product's trial phase. Good communication and teamwork between both the teams help create a product that meets customer needs and business goals.

R&D is the one that gives birth to the new product/innovation but is operations who will make it walk and run. Early involvement of operations in the process is critical to anticipate any risk or challenge within the production. A KPI on “new business” is needed to push have a share objective that makes it relevant for both. I finally suggest that the relation and understanding of both areas will not come only at NPD introduction; collaboration in other topics like review of HACCP plans or process improvement will support that communication and understanding to build trust and teamwork that benefits the launch.

First of all, establish a collaborative culture by setting common goals and KPIs. Create cross-functional teams to work on specific projects as per expertise, motivate open communication, critics and regular feedback. Implement a stage-gate process to ensure seamless handovers between R&D and production. Encourage R&D to involve production in the development process, and provide production with training on new technologies and ingredients science. Regularly meet ups, workshops, and ideation sessions to stimulate innovation. Also, incentivize collaboration by recognizing and rewarding joint achievements, and provide resources for joint projects, such as pilot plants or testing facilities, to facilitate scale-up and commercialization.
