You’re a freelancer in the Trade Show industry. How can you balance work and life?

(I'm answering the work/life balance Q up above there) When I worked for DTS back in the States, I was on the road every other month at industry events... Here in New Zealand I spent my first year travelling between Auckland and Wellington on a weekly basis. The best thing you can do to find balance in this sort of crazy schedule is to find your people on the road. 1. Make restaurant staff friends when you hit the same city/ airport more than once in a year. 2. Cook for yourself in your room when you can. Doesn't have to be gourmet. But it really makes a difference. 3. Keep with your exercise or go for walks where you land. It's your time before you have 100 people asking you 1000 things. GOOD LUCK ROAD WARRIORS!

As trade show professionals, we oftentimes take on lofty goals. Be specific and strategic - what outcome(s) are you hoping for and how do the goals align with achieving those outcomes? Make sure the goals (and tasks) align so you don't get overwhelmed in tasks.

Having a process for your trade show can help reduce issues and improve time management. Also, by having a specific routine, you can quickly pivot if something happens and get back on track.

Communication is one of the most vital things we can work on as trade show professionals, especially learning when to say no and when to delegate. Manage as you wish to go, and that includes how you communicate expectations and priorities to your client or organization.

Take the time to rest, to set limits on what you are responsible for, and enlist your community to provide support and assistance. Beware of energy vampires, who will use all of your time for their benefit! Trade show professionals make running trade shows look effortless - and by taking care of yourself, you can continue to do so.

Peer support helps all trade show professionals shine and provide an amazing experience. Be sure to recognize those who help you (bring them a coffee in the morning, tell their boss, etc) and be ready to support your community! It takes a village!

If your new in this industry it’s very easy to get stress and burnt out within a short period. Instead try to explore the positive sides and get to know as many people as possible. Seek support and friend if needed.

Embracing the process and finding fulfillment in every aspect from load-in, to setup, and networking is key to success and personal growth. By appreciating the small victories, learning from challenges, and staying present in each moment, you'll not only achieve your goals but also find joy and satisfaction along the way. And remember when you are on the floor ALWAYS wear a smile.

Working a trade show takes a body in top condition. On your feet for hours, non-stop talking with colleagues, customers and prospects would tire out the best Olympian. In order for most booth duty staff members to remain effective and represent their company professionally, try to follow these suggestions to remain in top physical condition. 1. Eat a balanced diet 2. Get quality sleep 3. Limit alcohol consumption 4. Schedule rest breaks 5. Wear comfortable shoes 6. Get off your phone 7. Get some fresh air on break. 8. Avoid too much caffeine, sugar and salt. 9. Get to bed at regular time 10. Eat quality foods. Taking care of yourself while working a trade show makes sense. You seldom get a second chance to make a good first impression.

Balance is key. This is likely going to give the air of simplicity, but you must 1) set boundaries and 2) not bite off more than you can chew. It's tempting. Don't give in. You'll be a better professional and a better person for it. Practice saying "no" to the things that don't excite and serve you so you have room to say "yes" to the things that do.
