You're falling behind on the latest trends in Business Intelligence (BI). What can you do to catch up?

Assessing the current state is always the first step to managing a change toward improvement. In my opinion, you can not grow unless you have a clear understanding of your powers and your weaknesses. Self-assessment by using quizzes, online questioners, checking the position descriptions advertised for the roles and any other credible source can be the first step toward becoming better in anything that we do.

There are several studies available on the market, where you check from other (and leading) companies, which technologies they are using or which innovation they are using. Or you can analyze Analyst reports, which show which technologies and innovations are emerging and gaining marlet traction. You can check platforms like LinkedIn or also hiring portals: What are the innovations and technologies which are discussed most? What are the skills which are mainly demanded in the job offerings?

You can always find resources online to know someone has done at least some part of the work you want to do now, before. Online resources, publications, YouTube, podcasts, LinkedIn Learning, Microsoft documentation, Github and many more are never-ending sources to learn from the work that our peers have done before. There are always correct and incorrect contents but the more you research the more you learn and be knowledgeable enough to figure out the accuracy of the sources you find online.

Of course you can use online training platforms to increase your skills. But in the end, it is practical skills that matter most from my perspective. Think about, which of the innovations can you bring up in your company and volunteer for being part of innovative projects. The company will benefit from your innovative ideas, you will be recognized as a future-oriented employee - and you have a chance to apply latest innovations in practice, which is a better learning opportunity than any course can be.

You always need to learn new skills every day to remain competent in the market. The interesting factor about this forever learning life in business intelligence is that it's not limited to the technical skills but also you need to have a good focus on interpersonal skills and storytelling abilities too. If we consider visualisation as one of the primary components of business intelligence, reports should be easily understandable by the audience and your interpersonal skills have key roles in it. I frequently use LinkedIn Learning, MS Learning and Udemy as my sources to find new training material and I am very confident to say you can find many more to benefit from them.

Don't be afraid to try new approaches and technologies, and be open to learning from failures. By embracing a culture of experimentation, you can stay ahead of the curve and drive meaningful insights for your organization. Establish learning groups for new innovations, so that you can exchange with other colleagues and learn together.

The most important reason for not being successful is being afraid of starting a new work. So don't be afraid and experiment to innovate and learn new things. The first time I worked with big data I was making a sentiment analysis on Twitter data with R and I was learning R at the same time. It was full of errors and it took me a very long time to complete a very simple work, but once it was done the result was beautiful and I still enjoy looking at that simple work that I've done that night.

We are living in a very small world and we are all connected by many communication media. So it's not difficult to figure out that networking and collaboration are important components for growth. you may be able to achieve on your own but collaboration can help you to overcome the problems faster and easier.
