I have unfortunately faced this experience as an instructor and what helped me deal with the students with minimal resistance, is that I had mentioned the rules of conduct in class on numerous occasions. Nobody in my class could say that they "didn't know". While I do understand the pressures that higher education students face (I was one for a long time!), and express empathy for the struggles that may lead to bad decisions, there are still consequences. Making sure that students thoroughly understand the rules, including what the rules are and why they are in place, can make the process less personal for the student. I tend to communicate the message - "you are not a bad student, you just made a bad decision".

I tend to survey multiple sources, and try to figure out some common patterns in what their experiences have taught them over the years. Typically, I can find useful wisdom that can guide me through the process.
