You have to understand their needs and interests in the matter at hand. Most times, resistance is not personal to the person making the suggestion (though it can be...), it has to do with the potential impact on the person who is resisting. Use empathy to understand: how will the suggestion impact each stakeholder? What's in it for them? What do THEY need and does the suggestion provide that?

Listening is certainly a critical skill for not just overcoming resistance but to understand what is being said and not. The stakeholders always have an underlying reason to resist which also includes dealing with change. Listening helps to understand their needs, intentions and apprehensions, and ask questions to open a dialogue. This helps to build a stronger narrative addressing needs and acknowledging emotions.

2 Empathize Openly

Empathy goes a long way in easing tensions and building rapport. When you encounter resistance, try to put yourself in the stakeholders' shoes to understand their perspective. Acknowledge their concerns and express genuine interest in their viewpoints. 5 Offer Reassurance

Often, resistance stems from fear of change or uncertainty about outcomes . Offer reassurance by outlining the support mechanisms in place to manage the transition to new ideas. Explain the steps that will be taken to ensure a smooth implementation and how any potential negative impacts will be mitigated. When stakeholders feel reassured about the process, they may be more open to embracing change.

It's really important to create a psychologically safe space that takes into account that participants bring different ways of interacting, thinking and communicating. You need to be able to recognise these differences and create a space that empowers those differences for the good of all participants. It's also recognising that sometimes that resistance could be used in a positive way to deepen understanding, provide moments for self-reflection, or to trigger shifts in attitudes etc.
