You're facing resistance from employees on sustainability. How can you get them on board?

Top of my list….. When you have a Why and ground yourself in this purpose. I truly believe l can deal with or if need discover the how!!

Uma boa maneira para vencer esse medo é demonstrando a sua equipe a importancia da mudan?a, quais as áreas impactadas e a causa raiz da melhoria, com isso todos entenderam aonde estava o problema e ir?o se sentir parte do processo. Vale pontuar os ponto positivos da mudan?a, como, o tempo gasto, a rastreabilidade do processo e a garantia que a equipe vai ter com a mudan?a. Sempre é bom abrir o diálogo para que cada um se expresse com ideias e dúvidas, assim todos estar?o mais engajados com a melhoria.

I believe that working sustainability and resilience into your company culture, core values, and strategic plan allows for greater focus and communication on the project opportunities that contribute to improving one's own community and therefore creating steps for global change.

A very good way to do this is to take the team out on a team bonding exercise to a community event. This has worked flawlessly for me till now, people are able to empathize a lot more when they see and feel how they can create a big difference with the small actions they take but as a group.

Sharing your company's Sustainability Report allows for transparency of goals and initiatives. Providing updates with measured successes and areas of improvement help keep sustainability efforts top of mind. You can't just talk the talk, you have to walk the walk.

You are the HSE Director and you are charged with initiating a corporate-wide directive to begin a focus on Sustainability (ESG efforts). You either need to have an expert on your leadership team or you need to be an expert (or know enough to withstand questioning at Board of Directors/CEO meetings). But what about all the dozens/hundreds of other HSE staff that you need to uphold this directive? Put yourself out there and speak to them and have round-table discussions where you lead meetings with Senior HSE and then "train the trainers" so that those Senior HSE can inform mid-level HSE, and so on. You will get the best support from the "E" experts in your team and that is good!

Start measuring something (electricity, natural gas, # of LED lights, whatever) and then start to share the trends on a company PowerBI/Dashboard. People love numbers and the more you can show them, then the more they want to be involved...especially if you goals for each site and grade them (Green=good/Red=not so good). Then the sites want to be GREEN! and will take it as a challenge. If you do this in the dark and only report numbers in an end of year statement, then people are blind to it all year and don't have as much ownership.

PowerBI/Dashboard = Green/good; Red/not good. You don't have to give people $$ as an incentive, just thing about how many people get a trophy or metal and are just as excited. So give them a Gold Star for a spot at the top of a BI pyramid. Site managers don't want to look bad, so use the psychology of Green/Red.

If you are the HSE director, you have to get some skin in the game. So figure out how you can be a part of a Sustainability Task Force (there are dozens of them). Then tell people you are taking time out of your busy schedule to be a part. Also, get with your contracts and vendor departments to make sure that they are making deals where your sales/purchases are tied to companies with better sustainability efforts. If you have money on the line, people will see that as a true commitment.
