Aceptar, entender y comprender el problema es primordial antes de iniciar con el proceso de solución. Parece increíble que en muchas ocasiones no se acepta y tratan de solucionarlo con peque?as acciones las cuales solo incrementarán el problema. Posteriormente, hay que ver la situación actual y compararla contra la situación deseada. El análisis de Kpi puede ser la primera entrada para ver en qué área se puede localizar el problema. Una vez analizada la situación actual, es muy recomendable crear un equipo basado en las habilidades necesarias como planeación, seguimiento, resolución de conflictos, creatividad y también la utilización de herramientas como el mapeo de procesos, el diagrama de Ishikawa, lluvia de ideas, costeo, las 8D

El equipo definirá que acciones de contención se tienen que hacer para evitar la fuga de producto defectuoso al momento de aplicar acciones rápidas para mejorar el proceso. Las acciones rápidas deberán ser analizadas con consciencia pensando también en la seguridad de las personas que estén en el proceso. Es deseable que estas personas también participen en la definición de las acciones rápidas, ya que son los que están en contacto directo con el proceso.

La técnica de los 5 por qué es buena, sin embargo, está demostrado que después del 3er por qué, el ser humano genera excusas. Es una condición normal. Es por eso que muchos cambian la pregunta del "por qué..."al "como es que..." Vaciar la información encontrada en ese análisis en un diagrama de Ishikawa, ayuda a ordenar las ideas clasificándolas en los rubros donde puede generarse el problema tales con en los Materiales, la Mano de Obra (instrucciones de trabajo y procedimientos), el Management, la Maquinaria, la Medición. A esta clasificación se llama las 5M, aunque pueden ser más, está abierto a la visión que se tenga del proceso.

Es común emplear un diagrama de gantt para realizar el plan de implementación y es bueno, solo hay que considerar que las actividades estén identificadas cuales son de revisión, cuales de verificación y cuáles de validación, así como integrar un plan de calidad para asegurar que todo salga bien y en presupuesto.
