Understand various layers and components of your system. Pay attention to the 'resources' of your system such as networks, servers such as EC2 instances or containers, k8s pods, databases, disks where reads-writes happen, in-memory cache etc. Use appropriate tools to monitor the resource usage and identify which specific resources are causing the bottleneck. In most business applications bottlenecks could be at the database layers. Which could require looking at queries and writes to the database that are causing bottleneck. For large scale systems with k8s and 1000s of pods you will need proper monitoring tools to identify which type of pods are having bottleneck.

Evaluate if problem can be solved by horizontally scaling the resources (i.e. by adding more instances of the similar type of resource) or do you need to vertically scale the resource (add more power to given resource). Understand the cost implications. And also find out if loads are evenly distributed over days or uneven. Can you have automated scaling options available to keep the costs under the limit. Take advantage of cloud services such ALBs and Istio in k8s for pod scaling. On database side you can have read and write replicas and you can re-direct all read queries to read instances. For in-memory cache you can scale it at run time by adding more power to it.

Establish robust observability of your resources. Setup SLAs and limits so that your cloudops team can get appropriate alerts in time when resources are reaching their capacity. Review the resource usage periodically and fine tune your scaling options and resource configurations.
