You're facing a massive database backup task. How do you decide which databases to prioritize?

First, we need to understand business criticality and regulatory requirements to determine the priority for backup tasks. Databases containing sensitive information or customer-facing data should be given the highest priority. We also need to prioritize databases with stringent RPO and RTO requirements. Implementing periodic full backups along with frequent incremental backups will ensure no data is lost without impacting system performance. Regular backup contingency tests are essential to verify the reliability of the backups being taken.

Critical Application' or core business applications Data. These databases might contain financial data, customer information, or other essential data for daily operations. Must take Backup according to their RTO and RPO. Back up large databases first and those with frequent data changes more often. Schedule full backups regularly for critical databases, with more frequent differentials/transaction logs for incremental changes for Core Business Databases. Regularly test backups to ensure successful restoration. A Backup process complete when you restore data from the backup files.

- Prioritize databases that support customer-facing applications or services. Downtime or data loss in these systems can directly affect customer satisfaction and business operations. - Identify databases that support core business functions such as inventory management, HR systems, or production databases. Prioritizing these ensures that essential business operations are not disrupted. - Databases containing sensitive or confidential information (e.g., personal data, financial records) should be prioritized to protect against data breaches and comply with regulations. - Databases with shorter RTOs (the time within which data should be restored) should be backed up earlier to align with business continuity plans.

From financial domain perspective, priority should be datasets used for regulatory reporting , client facing applications & datasets containing PII

Backups should be implemented when database usage is at its lowest typically at night. Priority should be given to databases that are critical for business operations or that have a lot of dependencies. Incremental backups should also be encouraged as this saves time and storage space. Backups should be well scheduled to avoid several backups occurring at the same time thereby degrading system performance.

In my experience, I usually back up databases containing sensitive information first. Then come the databases containing operations and finally the reporting and statistical databases compiled from other databases.
