In addition to having software, bar codes, scanners, periodic counting cycles focus on - organised warehouse set up - encourage and enable warehouse workers to fix the discrepancies on the spot using handhelds during their daily put away and picking tasks. These incremental fixes reduce planning issues and reduce the effort of periodic counting - Warehouse IT application usually comes with a report to show bins where IN and OUT transactions happens for bins. Exclude counting for these bins where the transactions have not happened - Do not print system inventory on the cycle counting report so that the staff that does physical counting (few lazy ones) do not just write the system number instead of counting physically

Regular audits are required. Human error will always occur. When I was with a food manufacturer early on my career we did nightly audits on items in the mechanical parts warehouse. Usual mechanics would forget to check parts out when the line was down. 10% audits of parts monthly made sure our counts were correct
