To build trust with a guarded new coaching client, start by establishing a welcoming and non-judgmental environment. Show genuine interest in their thoughts and feelings by actively listening and validating their experiences. Use open-ended questions to encourage dialogue, allowing them to share at their own pace. Be transparent about your coaching process and what they can expect, which helps demystify the experience. Most importantly, demonstrate consistency and reliability; follow through on promises and maintain confidentiality to reinforce their sense of safety. With patience and understanding, you can create a strong foundation of trust that encourages openness and collaboration.

Show your own vulnerability through story telling. Doing this consciously and/or subconsciously tells the other person "it's okay and safe for you to open up"

Trust is a consequence of actions and interactions ... the quality actions and interactions should be the driver of the coaching relationship. Coachee should sense you as coach are absolutely genuine in every expression and clearly wants to assist coachee reaching his/her objectives. Defining the objective is - most often - the greatest challenge at the start of [and during] the coaching sessions. Without clarity on the objectives, no real measurable results can be achieved and trust will never be reached.

To build trust with a guarded client, asking thoughtful questions, actively listening, and sharing your own experiences can create a sense of openness. Vulnerability fosters connection, so finding moments to share something personal can help the client feel safe. It's also important to address the unspoken—sometimes, acknowledging the client's guardedness directly by saying, 'I sense some hesitation—can you share what’s on your mind?'—can break down barriers and allow for deeper progress.
