In a situation such as this, it can help to remember (and to remind the parties involved) that we all share the same needs. Indeed, when people are in conflict it's not unusual for each of them to be trying to meet the exact same need for themselves. When we focus on identifying these underlying needs, it can often become much easier to find common ground. A facilitator who is able to help participants clarify their own needs and compassionately understand the needs of others will likely increase the likelihood that the parties in conflict can reach a strategy that works for everyone. By starting with needs rather than strategies, the facilitator can help to pave the way for creative and collaborative outcomes.
