I handle conflicting design preferences with developers by making sure we all understand each other. First, I listen to the developers' concerns and ideas to understand their technical limits and reasons. This helps me see their side and any issues that might affect the design. Then, I explain the design principles and user needs that guide my choices, showing how these help create a good user experience. I use user feedback and test results to show what works best. I try to find a middle ground by combining the developers' technical skills with the design goals, making sure we consider both views. I stress the importance of a smooth user experience and how it helps the project succeed!

This is most common situation that you would be facing as a PM. Positive news: you have a commited and product loving team Negative news: ypu can not have tussle between designer and Dev while building a great UX. How ould you deal: discuss and share your customer person definition, while it is important to have easy and smooth User journey but that should not be built by killing performance of the application. Discuss with the team what best can be achieved, but in any case do not build something to please on or the other but always your customer - end user.

In my View: Talk about my goals and hold frequent conversations with developers. We can work together to discuss and make decisions. We can conduct real-world testing and identify our target audience. We can try new things, make adjustments as needed, and seek for a middle ground. And always open for feedbacks and question.

As a designer, your number one priority is to be an advocate for the people using your product. The best way to make their case is with quantitative and qualitative data. Your opinion can be easily dismissed but raw data is hard to argue.

As a UX designer, your foremost allegiance is to the users. When preferences clash, prioritize revisiting the user's needs. Collect user data through surveys, interviews, and usability tests to inform your decisions. Present this data to developers to demonstrate why specific design choices are vital for a positive user experience. When developers see empirical evidence backing design decisions, they are more likely to understand and value the user perspective, facilitating collaborative efforts to create solutions that harmonize form and function. This approach strengthens the alignment between design and development, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience.

User stories: Use user stories to guide design and development decisions. Ensure that user needs are clearly articulated and prioritized in the backlog.

The designer and developer have got the same job of bringing out a desirable outcome tailored to the niche of the users. As much as this is done there’s the need for effectiveness and easily usable. The users’ need is to always be in mind and both the designer and developer is advised to walk solely in this light. This helps cut of excesses and unnecessary protocols and keeps both party solely on an effective job delivered.

The users should always be the center of any project, as it's for them that we solve problems in the end. We have to let go of our subjective understanding for a while to really think objectively about the problem and then empathize with users to find out how would they react to the feature or functional change. We have to make the products so seamless and easy for users that's our responsibility.

As a UI/UX designer, communicating clearly with users is essential. Clear communication helps users understand how to use your product without confusion, leading to a better user experience. When instructions and feedback are easy to understand, users can complete tasks more efficiently and are less likely to make mistakes. This not only increases user satisfaction but also builds trust in your product. Ultimately, clear communication makes your design more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Why it's important: Clear and open communication helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that both teams are on the same page. How to do it: Regular meetings: Schedule regular check-ins and design reviews with developers to discuss progress, challenges, and feedback. Constant and continuous communication cannot be overemphasized. You communicate when a task seems unclear. You communicate to review the set goals in order to avoid digression. You communicate to understand how best both parties (designer and developer) work and what best protocol each would appreciate. Communication brings the work to an easy flow of job delivering.

As the UI/UX Designer, it is crucial to articulate and convey to the team the purpose and goals of the design output, based on the project requirements. This ensures that everyone understands how the design will meet user needs and provide long-term benefits.

How to do it: Identify non-negotiables: Clearly define the critical design elements that are essential for a positive user experience. Be prepared to compromise on less critical aspects. Technical feasibility: Work with developers to understand technical challenges and explore alternative solutions that meet both design and technical requirements. Collaborative problem-solving: Approach conflicts as opportunities for collaborative problem-solving. Brainstorm together to find innovative solutions that satisfy both parties.

Compromise is the key factor in how a project can be practically implemented within all constraints and multiple factors affecting the decision and choices. Negotiation has to be done, and people have to be brought to the middle ground and agree upon a decision and solution that is realistic and feasible.

creating prototypes is crucial because it enables effective visualization, facilitates user testing and feedback, ensures technical feasibility, promotes collaboration, and enhances overall project efficiency. This alignment between UX design and development ultimately leads to a product that is both user-friendly and technically robust.

Why it's important: Prototyping and testing help validate design decisions and ensure they work well within technical constraints. How to do it: Create prototypes: Develop interactive prototypes to visualize design concepts and gather feedback from both users and developers. User testing: Conduct usability testing with real users to validate the effectiveness of design solutions. Use feedback to refine designs. Iterate based on feedback: Use insights from testing to make necessary adjustments. Ensure that changes are communicated clearly to the development team.

Prototyping is essential for any creation that serves a large group of people (users). Testing with MVP (Minimum viable product) is only logical because it gets us the data and feedback before we invest a ton of resources (labor & capital) into a project. It is a cost and time-effective way to improve the product without wasting time and resources.

Developers are logic people - process and logic flow driven. Brainstorming with developers and being open to their way of thinking, can, in many times, improve the UX. If you know to communicate and explain your UX logic properly and why it makes sense - developers and PM's will understand and follow willingly. If there is an argue about UX, maybe its because you (designer) insisted on something that is a bit difficult to implement without explaining it properly. Sometimes there are technical limitations (could be many reasons for it) that you also need to be aware of, as a UX designer, and know to match the UX to these limitations on one hand, and not compromise on what is critical for a good UX on the other hand.

Why it's important: Continuous iteration allows for ongoing improvement and adaptation to both user needs and technical constraints. How to do it: Agile approach: Adopt an agile approach to design and development, allowing for regular iterations and incremental improvements. Feedback integration: Continuously integrate feedback from users and developers into the design process. This helps in refining the product and addressing any issues promptly. Monitor and adapt: Regularly monitor the product’s performance and user feedback post-launch. Be ready to make further adjustments as needed to enhance the user experience.

There's an Allan Watts quote I like and that fits pretty well here: "The more a thing tends to be permanent, the more it tends to be lifeless." Users change as does their environment, and thus user stories and expectations change. To continually meet those, it's important to stay up to date, collect new data regularly and ask users about what they want. What is important is that everyone in the team is aware of that. The need for something to be changed doesn't mean it wasn't done well initially, so it shouldn't be seen as critique.

You fight, and the last person standing wins. :) But on a serious note, the most common problem is not understanding each other's point of view well. The second most common problem is ignorance and ego. Both of these can be solved simply by spending more time together and better understanding each other's logic, constraints, and thinking. I have not yet seen a situation where it was impossible to reach a healthy compromise for the sake of the final product quality. Plus, long-term, it will bring even more benefits: designers hugely benefit from being better with technology as it increases their market value and opens the door for more innovation.

What I've found to be very helpful is a basic understanding of how developers work. Knowledge about HTML & CSS for example certainly helps to build designs that tend to be more feasible. If you don't speak the same, or at least a similar language, it gets hard to explain, understand and compromise. I can't code, but by asking questions and listening to why something can't be done has helped me greatly to get a feeling for what can be done and what can't. Which reduces the need for feedback loops, which then saves time that can be used elsewhere.
