First step if to have had a pre workshop needs assessment or pre/post test to see where everyone's baseline knowledge is. You can then craft your workshop content based on the results of the pre workshop assessment, pitching the workshop at a level where everyone should be able to follow. Then do knowledge checks throughout your session to measure the effectiveness.

Most of my classes are 1 to 4 hour workshops, depending on the subject. Therefore, I use a combination of the three suggestions above. During the workshop, I actively track participation and try to encourage those who have not answered yet to share their knowledge during the training. I sometimes assess learning outcomes by throwing in a quick activity, or knowledge check of some kind. From time to time, I have a small prize involved in the knowledge check which will often grab everyone's attention - whether they want to win or see who takes all the prize. After the facilitation is complete, I provide anonymous feedback forms so that all participants can let me know what they liked or disliked about the class without worry.

One thing I found useful is the utilisation of the Participant Action Plan Approach, PAPA where the participants have to actively identify the skills they learn and put it down in writing as a commitment to start utilising
