En mi experiencia, salvo que exista una fuerte razón para no poder interrumpir las operaciones, la actualización tecnológica debe realizarse considerando un paro programado, de esta manera puede asegurarse rigurosidad en la implementación al eliminar la eventualidad de ocurrencia de eventos imprevistos. En todo caso, no por el hecho de que se vaya a ejecutar durante un paro programado, deben siempre realizarse la mayor cantidad posible de pruebas rigurosas "fuera de línea" para garantizar una ejecución eficiente y la no afectación a las operaciones de la empresa.

A veces puede ser difícil llegar a un "consenso" sobre la necesidad o no de ejecutar una actualización tecnológica. Regularmente las áreas operativas desean mantener el sistema que ha estado funcionando, mientras que el área técnica desea implementar mejoras y aprovechar las ventajas inherentes a la actualización tecnológica. En algunos casos esta "discrepancia" de opinión podría zanjarse buscando sustento en misión y la visión de la empresa: ?la innovación tecnológica planteada se alinea con los objetivos empresarias a corto, mediano o largo plazo?
