You're faced with technical issues during a presentation. How do you handle distractions effectively?

If you have technical issues during presentation then you have to keep patience means stay calm and try to find out issue, what issue is happening during presentation. Address your audience without hesitation, tell your audience for waiting with thankful words or gratitude. Then try to solve issue.

Experienced speakers always come prepared, come what may. Technical glitches can't be avoided anyway. Some tips to consider: 1. Remember: You and Your Presentation matter. Slides from the laptop are merely visual aids. You are the presenter, not the slides! 2. When the glitch happens, you just power through, stay calm & be oblivious to what's going on. You don't need the audience to see a panicky presenter. They are enjoying your speech so don't spoil it for them! 3. Practice your presentation without slides. As long as you know your story at your finger tips, you will be able to ensure a smooth & impactful delivery. 4. Prepare a few nuggets of anecdotes, stories, questions, in your toolbox. Use them appropriately. The show must go on!

I’ve been there - standing in front of a sea of expectant faces, my presentation slides doing their best impression of a frozen screen, and me trying not to look like a deer caught in headlights. The tech gods does have a mischievous side. But I have my secret weapon - staying calm! When things go awry, the first thing I remind myself is to breathe. Keeping a cool head helps you think clearly and navigate through the hiccups, while panic might make you feel like you’re starring in a dramatic disaster movie, but it doesn’t solve the problem. So, instead of imagining a worst-case scenario where the room fills with a chorus of groans and sympathetic glances, I channel my inner zen master.

Learn to be calm in difficult situations. Technical glitches are normal to have. Be confident with yourself. Use humor around it. Engage more and direct, use your voice and analog.

I’ve learned that the best defense against tech troubles is a solid offense. Planning ahead has become my go-to strategy. Before the big day, I make sure to double-check all my tech. This includes testing the equipment, ensuring compatibility, and even having a backup plan. I always carry a USB drive with a backup of my presentation and have an alternative way to access my slides if my laptop decides to stage a protest. I also have a printed version of my key points just in case technology decides it needs a nap.

For the most experienced public speakers (incl. emcees/debate hosts) out there, nothing is more important than risk management. So much so that it soon becomes second nature. Anticipating what could happen, how and why, and - most importantly of all - what you can do about it is not only essential to becoming a smart, versatile public speaker, but will also boost your creative and improvisation skills...a lot!

When tech glitches strike, I’ve found that directly engaging with my audience can turn the distraction into a positive experience. Instead of letting the tech trouble steal the spotlight, I use it as an opportunity to interact with my audience. I might say “Looks like my slides have decided to take a little break. Let’s switch gears and have a quick discussion about what we’ve covered so far!” This approach not only shifts focus away from the malfunction but also keeps the audience involved and invested in the presentation. It’s like having a spontaneous Q&A session that wasn’t part of the original plan but turns out to be a hit.

Speak to the skepticism before it speaks to you. Others in the audience might notice this and you should bring it up. Let them know it is happening (depending on how serious the tech issue is), and let them know this is something that happens with almost ALL presentations at some point. Use humor, when possible. Make the audience laugh and totally relate to you and what you/your team are/is dealing with.

Humour is the great uniter of minds - and it takes you away from focusing on yourself and your situation so much. Win win all round!

You use the opportunity to get closer to the audience by demonstrating that you dont need the tech. Turn a problem into a win.

Address technical issues lightly. Let your audience know what happened but keep away from playing the blame game (blaming the organiser, host, etc...). Then address how you are going to proceed and continue with your message. A lot of times the "worst" presentations are turning into the "best" ones. Without your slides you have to rely on yourself and your message and that′s what matters most.

Use what ever props you have: white board or even your voice- tell them -a picture or graph is worth a thousand words! And humor does help.

I have had a scenario where it actually helped me to distill my presentation into the key points I had while preparing it. It ended up for the audience to be more meaningful and memorable than the nr of slides I had prepared. And when you don't have slides as a back up, your own delivery, body language/voice/eye contact, becomes more important so you connect better with the audience.
