Being adaptable is a key factor in being a photographer. As a photo journalist you always have to expect the unexpected. Nothing is ever as it appears. This extends into all photography genres. Every shoot can be fraught with potential banana skins. The best planned shoots can soon fall apart for a myriad of reasons. The key is to adapt to the new location and use it to inspire your creative output. There are opportunity’s around every corner.
-
Scout the New Location: As soon as I arrive, I’d take a few minutes to explore the area. I’d look for interesting backdrops, good lighting, and unique angles that can enhance the shoot. Adjust Lighting Techniques: I’d assess the natural light available. If it's too harsh, I might find shaded areas or use reflectors (if I have them) to soften the light. If it’s dim, I’d consider using a flash or a portable light source. Communicate with Subjects: I’d explain the change to my subjects and get their input. Keeping them engaged can help maintain a relaxed atmosphere, which often leads to better photos.

Use online resources like Google Maps to understand the layout, lighting conditions, and any unique features. Identify the best spots for shooting based on natural light, backgrounds, and available space. If you're outdoors, take advantage of natural light, paying attention to the direction of sunlight and using reflectors or diffusers to soften shadows. Indoors, evaluate ambient lighting and adjust accordingly. Bring portable lights, flashes, or LED panels to create the perfect lighting setup that suits the new environment.
