Effective communication is key—if a change, such as patching, might cause disruption, the risk should be pre-calculated and clearly communicated.

I am not an Incident Response expert but this is what I would suggest along with others who have contributed. I would say you will want to do is isolate the most critical assets that are impacted from the network to mitigate further damage. Then prioritize which incident is most critical and impacting the business to handle first so you can execute your full Incident Response and Business Continuity plans and isolate all impacted systems. While your team executes the plan, your incident response lead can communicate with the necessary stakeholders, leadership, customers, employees, etc. Finally document all actions taken and evaluate later what was the cause and how to mitigate and prevent future occurrences.

Form Dedicated Response Teams! -Incident Response Team: This team is typically composed of cybersecurity professionals, including security analysts, network engineers, forensic experts, and other IT specialists. Each member has a clear role in the response process. -Assign Roles and Responsibilities: For multiple incidents, it may be necessary to form sub-teams, each dedicated to a specific incident. Assign team leads who can coordinate efforts and report back to the central command.

Communication is key! Keeping everyone informed about what's happening and the steps being taken is crucial. I also agree—transparency and walking everyone through the situation help build trust and keep everyone aligned with the response efforts.

Communication is important, however, communicating status on resolving the issue(s) are not as important as actually solving the issue(s). Getting experts the necessary resources to solve the problem(s) and then communicate to leaders while the experts work is usually the best way to handling incidents. Having an intermediary that speaks and understand technical jargon can be a great asset, as they can listen and observe what the experts are doing, while conveying status up the chain.

When it comes to the BCP, some common scenarioes should be described and possible solutions be mentioned, like what to do in the event of a data breach, ransomware attack, DDoS, or physical event like a fire, pandemic or power outage.

Several years ago I was part of an incident at a hospital I worked at where the network blacked out after construction workers cut the cable while excavating. The consequence was that the clinic was unable to access critical patient data. Unfortunately, the backup connection was not working, but the BCP had taken that into account by having portable 4G modems and backup laptops ready. This extra layer of business continuity planning was included as a learning point from a similar prior incident. In this instance, it enabled the clinic to quickly return to normal operations. Lessons learned works, and will pay dividends down the road.
