You're faced with a diverse audience. How can you customize your storytelling approach to engage everyone?

During a tech conference, Maya faced a diverse audience. She started her story about building a startup, using relatable challenges like balancing work and life. She blended humor with tech insights, adding universal themes of perseverance. Midway, she switched to an interactive Q&A, letting the audience guide the narrative. By adapting her story to the crowd’s interests, Maya kept everyone engaged and inspired. The audience left feeling connected and motivated to chase their dreams.

Over time, I've realised that absolute knowledge of my audience has produced glitch-free communication. And the feedback has been remarkable. So, knowing who your audience is/are goes a long way in passing that information you want them to have, and as well save both parties the time. Knowing what your audience needs (emotional , psychological or mental) are and speaking it head-on is a key factor in communication, that can never be over-emphasized. Understanding your audience is the main communication channel you need to unlock that feedback you desire.

Sometimes ago, I was privileged to address a group of young people, I was able to get some facts from them by, first, sharing my own personal story and experience with them. This 'hack' helped me to make them feel at home with me; safe and free to share their experiences and personal stories. I think sharing a similar or near-similar experience of yours with your audience makes them feel inclusive and puts you as someone who won't be judgmental, should they share some personal issues with you. This way, you've unlocked a part of them that makes them feel comfortable and see you as a safe haven to pour out all of them. So, absolutely, you'll get all you need to get, using this 'hack'.

Well, this is not far from the truth. Sharing others experiences with your audience, irrespective of their statuses and backgrounds make everyone of them have a sense of belonging. So, no one is left out in your communication model

From my experience as a public speaker, when speaking to a diverse audience, I ensure my language is clear and free from ambiguity. I always stick with words that are universally recognized to avoid confusion and to keep the room safe. This approach enables everyone to be in sync and propel understanding.

If there's something I've learned as a young communicator, it is speaking in simpler terms. After all, communication is effective when your audience understands you and that is determined by the feedback you get. I once had a terrible experience where I spoke beyond the cognitive reasoning of a small audience sometime ago, my eye connection made me decode, immediately that I was not passing any impactful message. I, immediately, switched to the level of the audience, and I was happy that the feedback was commendable afterwards. So, simple language is my go-to any day, any time, I'm addressing any audience, until the need to use some terms arise.
