Simplicity, interpretability and cross validation are my go-to. More complex models can be made once you understand the problem better.

Start Simple Baseline Model: Begin with a simple model to set a performance baseline. This could be a linear regression, logistic regression, or a basic decision tree. Feature Selection: Use a limited number of features initially to understand their impact on the model’s performance. 2. Evaluate Model Performance Cross-Validation: Use cross-validation to evaluate the model's performance on different subsets of the data. Metrics: Monitor key performance metrics like accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC-ROC for classification, or RMSE and MAE for regression.

Balancing complexity and simplicity in a data mining model requires a strategic approach. First, I start with a simple model to ensure interpretability and ease of implementation. I prioritize features that provide the most significant insights while minimizing noise. As I iterate, I introduce complexity gradually, focusing on the trade-off between accuracy and overfitting. Regular validation and cross-validation techniques are employed to ensure the model remains robust. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a model that is both effective and maintainable, meeting business objectives without unnecessary complexity.

At first we have to get hold of what lies in data. Go with smaller models at first and see how well decision boundary is fitting and later go with hyper parameter tuning. This is the process which we have to use even in complex models also

Incremental Complexity (adding polynomial features, using ensemble methods etc.). 4. Use Cross-Validation techniques and check for Overfitting, 5.Use Feature Selection and Regularization Techniques (balance complexity by penalizing large coefficients), 6. Evaluate the model and test for interpretability, 7. Perform Iterative Refinement. By these steps You can build a better model

Overfitting not only depends on data split but also how good data is along with its annotation and its ability to cover different variations. There are few parameters which can be used to control overfitting by playing it around. One such parameter is learning rate

Relying on any theoretical insights, such as physical viability of a result for example, is also something I find useful. Of course, this is better suited to situations where such insights are available. Therefore, interpretability and cross validation are some general purpose solutions

I don’t agree much with stakeholder communication Perspective, the reason is simple models are faster and only advantage is interpretability of features will be possible in simple models. In the hindsight not every training process or models will use raw features as it is without any preprocessing techniques, so I don’t agree much that communication will be easier in this rather these models are fast and easier to train.

This is a simple point and I agree with the above. However, cross validation can still serve as a vital metric. Further, a diverse training set can improve generalization of the model

From my experience, pragmatic tuning is about making informed, practical decisions during the model development process to balance performance with real-world constraints and needs. So, the steps can be performed for this 1. Balancing Theory with Practice like Real-world Constraints to take into account practical factors like computation resources, time constraints, and deployment environments and Trade-offs approach for model performance, such as accuracy, interpretability, and computational efficiency. 2. Iterative Process which includes Feedback Loops and Empirical adjustments based on observed performance metrics and practical considerations. 3. Business Need like does it align model tuning with business goals and user needs?

For the Simplicity and ease of use: RapidMiner, KNIME offer user-friendly interfaces and are good for quick prototyping and building straightforward models without deep technical knowledge. For Flexibility and Customization: Python (with libraries like scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy) and R offer a high degree of flexibility and are well-suited for building custom models and performing complex data manipulations. For Scalable and Big Data Solutions: Apache Spark and Hadoop are designed for handling large-scale data and can be used to build complex models that need to scale. For Advanced Analytics: TensorFlow and PyTorch are great for building complex models like deep neural networks.
