One of the toughest things is to receive critical feedback. Most of people have sense of hubris and the thought of taking criticism without being defensive is unimaginable. As an associate you should take this as an opportunity to learn about your blind spots. Where can I improve? What additional skills do I need to work one? Am I meeting our customers needs? This is and many other questions can be answered by listening to the criticism. One thing I would suggest is to follow up with the individual on a regular basis to ensure that you are improving in the areas that needed attention. Leverage your resources for growth.

When receiving feedback, have a discussion with your leader—not your “boss”—to fully understand the areas needing improvement. It’s not the topic of this article, but the term “boss” is outdated and conjures memories of my first job (in high school, through DECA), where my “boss” would bellow my name and bang his coffee mug loudly with a pen for a refill without looking up or uttering another word. He was a boss, and he was awful. A leader, by contrast, fosters growth and collaboration. If any part of the feedback is unclear, ask for clarification to ensure you’re on the same page. It’ll show your commitment to development and make the conversation a constructive one. Also, best practices and innovation are often born from feedback!
