You're faced with conflicting opinions on client strategy. How do you guide them towards a decision?

When clients face conflicting opinions on strategy, start by thoroughly understanding the underlying issues driving each perspective. Engage in open dialogue to uncover the core concerns and objectives of each side. Facilitate a structured analysis of the potential benefits and drawbacks of each approach. By clarifying the issues and aligning them with the client’s overall goals, you can guide them towards a decision that addresses their primary concerns and maximizes their strategic objectives. This approach ensures that the chosen strategy is well-informed and suited to their needs.

Understanding the issues deeply is the first step towards effective mediation. Ask insightful questions and use active listening to learn the motivations behind each point of view. Look behind the obvious to understand the underlying issues and drives. This strategy aids in locating common ground and important goals that are frequently obscured by disagreement. By addressing these factors, you may create a collaborative atmosphere and steer talks towards positive solutions.

Navigating conflicting opinions on client strategy requires a balance of empathy and strategic insight. I also find it helpful to facilitate a workshop or a session where stakeholders can openly discuss their views in a structured environment. Ultimately, guiding clients towards a decision means aligning everyone on a common vision and fostering a collaborative atmosphere that values diverse perspectives.

I would ask three questions: 1) What is the decision to be made / the core problem to be solved? 2) What do you need to believe in order for an answer to be true? 3) What evidence supports the “need to believes”? In the absence of a clear fact base, decisions can become more opinion driven and therefore more difficult to reach consensus on.

Assuming both opinions have merit, and if the team cannot decide between them, the most objective way to decide is to test both ideas. However, this isn't always possible. Fortunately, today's tech stacks enable teams to set up strategies for measurement, execution, analysis, and review to find the one that best reaches the strategy's objective.

Use SWOT analysis to compare the impacts. Identify potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities ans threats. And then analyse and compare the findings. It's a great tool to help you present gathere information ina more structured way, compare the options, assess the risks and decide on the preferred way forward.

This involves assessing both short-term and long-term consequences. When negotiating a compromise on a project timeline, I analyze how each proposed schedule would affect project deliverables and team workload. This analysis clarifies the trade-offs and definitely helps in making a more informed decision

Once you've understood the issues, evaluate the potential outcomes of each proposed approach. Assess both the immediate and future consequences, alongside the associated risks and advantages. This stage is crucial for offering an impartial view of what each strategy involves. By doing so, you enable the client to clearly see the various paths and make informed decisions. For example, while working with a logistics company, we had to decide between investing in new technology or expanding the workforce. I conducted a thorough impact analysis, considering factors like cost, implementation time, and potential productivity gains.

Establish an environment where all participants feel comfortable expressing their viewpoints without fear of dismissal or retribution. Encourage respectful communication and ensure that every perspective is given due consideration. This approach can uncover new insights, promote mutual understanding, and lead to more collaborative decision-making. For instance, during a project with a manufacturing client, there was a significant conflict between the engineering and sales teams regarding product features. By organizing a series of mediated discussions where both sides could openly share their concerns and ideas, we were able to foster a more collaborative atmosphere.

While facilitating dialogue, also create a listening space where one side listens to the other side. This will create a better dialogue and an opening for accepting different ideas.

Clients pay their advisers to give advice. It doesn’t mean that they will take it however. A good adviser knows how to navigate this and persuade the client to take the best path for their enterprise. Many advisers don’t do this, they just go along with what the client requires and write a self covering email. This is unfortunate. I often struggle with clients over bad choices they make, and the key is understanding their perspective and why they feel that they want to make a choice you don’t suggest. That could be because of facts you were not aware of or different political reasons but it’s critical to get to the bottom of things and have that further discussion with the client. Having hard conversations is how a trusted adviser acts.
