My experience has led me to believe that we, as geologists, rarely get the interpretation correct on the first attempt. By paying attention to the details we strive to get less and less wrong. A “piece” of geologic data contains a wealth of information. Some of that information can only be unlocked through experience - knowing what to look for and what it means. Mentors can be invaluable. Truly conflicting interpretations, in my experience, are rare. It is often the lack of using correct interpretive techniques that creates unrealistic interpretations.

The way the question is posed is flawed, IMHO. Do we have conflicting data or conflicting interpretations?? Data is an observation and conflicting data taken at or about the same time at the same location on the earth can generally be resolved by understanding the way in which it was collected. Interpretations on the other hand are the geo’s best guess at putting the data together to form an earth model. Interpretations are full of bias. Resolving the differences between interpretations requires diving into the biases behind each.

I’m trying to think of any project that doesn’t have conflicting data. We are interpreting geologic features with remote sensing instruments and projections. The question posed implies that an interpreter has to pick an answer when having conflicting interpretations are what should go into final risking of your projected outcomes. Anyone note how the AI train of questioning is that more data or further machine learning will get a correct answer? Key point I think is that AI can’t do critical thinking, it only is a tool for more rapid analyses - like when Excel first adopted.?
