How do you balance urgency with self-care in your work life?

When faced with a client's urgent request, prioritize your well-being by assessing the situation calmly. Start by determining the urgency and importance of the request—can it be delayed or delegated? If it's essential, set clear boundaries regarding your availability and communicate realistic timelines to the client. Break the task into manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from your team if needed. Finally, schedule short breaks to recharge, ensuring you maintain focus and avoid burnout while addressing the client's needs.

When faced with a client’s urgent request, it’s important to manage both the task and your well-being. Start by setting realistic expectations, letting the client know what can be done within the timeframe. Break the work into smaller, manageable tasks to stay organized, and seek support from your team if needed to avoid taking on the full burden alone.
-
If it is a legitimate request and their previous requests don't follow the same last minute pattern, I will have two conversations: 1. First one with myself: What can I realistically do within the timeframe provided? What risks does this last minute work pose to my other clients or work? Do I actually want to do it? 2. Second with the client: Get an understanding of their urgency and what the client gets out of this. Manage expectations around timeframe, quality, and amount of work that can be done. Provide clear boundaries.
-
When an urgent client request hits, pause to assess: is this truly a crisis or can it wait an hour? If it's a crisis, channel all your mental and physical energy into handling it with mastery—your strength is immense, and you’re capable of navigating any challenge that comes your way. If it can wait, embrace a moment of silence. Spend time thinking critically, planning your approach, and considering each step. This quiet pause will prepare you to respond with clarity and purpose. Incorporate silence meditation for 5-10 minutes every four hours. This practice supports your well-being and empowers you to meet real-world demands with focus and resilience. You're prepared to face anything life brings.

To handle a client's urgent request without sacrificing my well-being, I assess the request's urgency, communicate realistic timelines, and prioritise my existing commitments to ensure a balanced approach.
