Once we're in networks, security is a part of it in which one can excel. Initially, one needs good understanding of networks, how a network is built (I believe one can only protect when he/she has an idea of how it is built). Understanding routers, firewalls, fundamentals of OS, basics of security, etc. Then one can focus on tools along with working as a networks personnel. Working directly as a manager, without hands-on experience in something cannot be a great idea most of the times. I believe most of us have come across some or the other person, who's never been into tech but has been appointed a top position, and the mildest way of saying this could be, "they have a huge learning curve in tech".
