You’re an entry level architect. What are the most important problem solving skills you need to succeed?

As an entry-level architect, crucial problem-solving skills include spatial reasoning, attention to detail, and effective communication. For instance, when faced with a tight budget for a residential project, the ability to creatively optimize space usage while maintaining functionality is essential.

Analytical skills are part of every field, and it is commonly perceived as research, compression, and results. However, in architecture, analytical skills are focused on the physical properties and theoretical approach of design. Young architects can achieve analytical skills by keeping up with the latest design solutions. These solutions can acquire ground in many divisions such as aesthetics, environmental, and cultural. Young architects must evaluate the presented data and create an analysis sheet to track their design progress and challenges.

Architects must understand the dynamics of appropriate space. There are international standards that provide accurate dimensions to spaces that designers can rely on. Although the data is provided, architects must examine their spatial designs to reach a realistic understanding of space. And depending on the design concept, these examinations will provide designers with assurance to accuracy for the design to be constructed.

Overdesigning: Some entry-level architects may be tempted to incorporate excessive design elements, leading to overcomplicated and impractical solutions. A well-thought-out, simple design can often be more effective and cost-efficient. Not Staying Updated with Technology: The architectural field is constantly evolving with new technologies. Failing to stay updated on the latest software tools and design trends can put architects at a disadvantage in terms of efficiency and competitiveness. Addressing these rookie mistakes requires a combination of ongoing education, experience, and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures.

Before we build anything, we build relationship first. Through conversations, we will open up ourselves to understand the shared interest between parties and to understand is to appreciate. The ability to communicate through various medium will eliminate unnecessary barriers and exploration while overcoming the learning curve for junior architect. Communication makes information and knowledge accessible.

Perhaps the narration, precise writing and sketching skills are crucial as well. As a medium to translate ideas and coordination works.

Lack of Communication: Effective communication is crucial in architecture. Rookie architects may struggle with clearly conveying their ideas to team members, clients, or contractors. Miscommunication can result in errors and delays in project completion.

Site Visits: Always make sure to take note of the extent of implementation of changes. One time, I forgot to check whether the wiring for an electrical fixture had been done, assuming that since the electrician had marked out the location, the wiring would be done. Much to my dismay, tiling had already happened the next time I visited the site, without the electrical point for the light fixture. And that's the story of how a bathroom wall portion had to be re-tiled to make room for the mirror light. Not one of my proudest moments, but definitely a big learning one.

Aesthetics at the Expense of Functionality: While aesthetics are important, some rookie architects might prioritize them over functionality. It's crucial to strike a balance between form and function to ensure that the design meets the practical needs of the users. Not Seeking Feedback: Entry-level architects might be hesitant to seek feedback from more experienced colleagues or clients. Constructive criticism is valuable for professional growth, and avoiding it can hinder improvement. Neglecting Sustainability: In the current architectural landscape, sustainability is a key consideration. Ignoring eco-friendly practices and materials may result in designs that are outdated or incompatible with evolving environmental standards.
