I would recommend that you take a different approach i you are in mechanical design of products/machines. More often, we base our design based on what we know of manufacturing processes. However, If you take workshops that make you practice this process, let's say bending and shaping sheet metal, you are far more likely to design a better part in sheet metal.

staying head of the curve, Engineers need to put what it takes to be in a better position in term of knowledge and skills, starting with the awareness first, where some effort need to be exerted, some Companies Monitor the progression of engineers, on how the acquire certain Skill Set required for the Job. As starting point to shorten the journey, making it smooth knowing that there is no short cut , but need to set the path, through Coaching & Mentoring , talking to seniors & people who are passionate about the trade in hand, one tip, young engineers can follow is to looks at the trade Body of Knowledge Book, where the required Technical skill is crafted in a concise way, this serve as starting point to grasp the skill in a broad way.
