Not just in the field of corrections and criminal justice, but in all fields in the private and public sector. The broadest view possible will give you the best results when it comes to knowing what is going on in this business.

I stay ahead by involvement,communication and training-I actively seek improvements and upliftment in my field, hence i explore training, communicate with burgesses,explore higher education options, research, stay abreast on worldwide news,I network alot as well... and I stay consistent.

These networks are great to gather and share information, and get updated TTP’s. I would also recommend the NAEMT and FEMA groups to stay ahead of the curb.

Learning is the best way to stay up on the curve. I have always continued learning so I could become a subject matter expert.

I think that the key moment of success is continuous education in EMERGENCY/crisis management, participation in trainings and constant contact with experts in the field. Implementation of the newest standards and studying the latest guidelines, ensures that we follow the best.

Once you perform such duties everyday of managing emergency you develop the love of taking the profession further through open opportunities that are there needs expects or specialists

One must be aware of all trends and all aspects of change whether in tech, management, leadership, medical techniques and from all quarters.

When I joined online communities and forums such as platforms like LinkedIn groups or specialized forums dedicated to disaster management and resilience-building efforts, it provided me with opportunities to engage with professionals, share insights, and stay informed about the latest discussions and developments in the field.

One key requirement of exercises and simulations is that they test plans to the point of failure. I have frequently observed exercises which result in “high fives” all round whilst none of the parameters have been stretched to breaking point. It’s better to know where the plan will start to fall apart from safe environments such as exercises and this, in turn, allows plans to be adjusted and improved.

Exercises developed in a way that promote continuous learning, team building and build participant confidence will create a willingness to regularly exercise. The test mentality is outdated and creates a pass/fail pressure. If the idea is to prepare a team and see if plans are fit for purpose the best results are when you regularly informally play out risks as a team which builds confidence and innovation. Exercises should be a positive experience that gives teams the muscle memory to face real situations and improves organisational readiness in a safe learning environment. It is so rare to get resources together to exercise. Best to use the time to promote emergency management and create a great ‘can do’ vibe in your team!

Exercises and simulations will only be as good as those leading them. It is down to organisations to ensure those responsible for leading exercises and simulations have the knowledge and experience to carryout up to date and relevant training.

When applying to new ideas and concepts one must visualize how things should be to make them become popular to others that you want to share those ideas with.

As well as testing plans and SOPs, tabletop exercises help different actors get to know each other in a safe environment. While at a disaster management simulation exercise in Cambodia we had government departments, the military, the UN and NGOs all in the same room for a day - something that normally never happens - working through a scenario but with no tangible consequences. I role played the international media, and threw some curveballs myself. It would have been even better had there been more follow up.

Those are the guiding pillars of education to see how you perform as a learner and as teacher or manager in terms of stressful events that needs your total attention and all will be assisting you when you call the shorts to attend to the emergency

Obviously you can’t be to sensitive to someone’s opinion. Even a negative one can help you improve on your mistakes. No doubt that positive reinforcement is the best way to achieve improvement goals.

To stay ahead of the curve you need to attend as many fires and emergencies as possible to get exposure and learn from such. Because no two fires are the same.

As a professional, I shall always be looking at the safety angle involved in all functions and news I attend or learn. After the other important interactions are over, I shall ascertain the safety aspects every where and keep on asking questions first to myself then to the concerned person available either in person or over phone about the potential emergencies and the resultant countermeasures. In case Iam not convinced , I shall convey my view point about the safety measures to be in place. Besides above, I shall always remain connected with the stake holders.
