1 Assess your strengths and weaknesses

The first step to becoming a better leader is to know yourself. What are your core values, beliefs, and goals as an educator? What are your strengths and areas of improvement as a leader? How do you handle stress, feedback, and challenges? To answer these questions, you can use self-assessment tools, such as the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), or the StrengthsFinder. You can also ask for feedback from your peers, mentors, or supervisors. By assessing your strengths and weaknesses, you can identify your leadership style, preferences, and gaps.

Your assessment is only as good as what you are assessing against. I would advise using a combination of the components of emotional intelligence (e.g. social awareness, etc.) that Dan Goleman describes in his books and a leadership evaluation rubric that your org or district uses. Be sure to ask others how they see you to ensure you are mitigating bias in your assessment. If you have access to a 360, these can be incredibly helpful.

2 Learn from other leaders

The next step to improving your leadership skills is to learn from other leaders. You can do this by observing, listening, and asking questions to the leaders you admire or work with. How do they lead their teams, deal with problems, or make decisions? What skills, behaviors, or strategies do they use? What challenges or mistakes have they faced and overcome? You can also learn from other leaders by reading books, articles, blogs, or podcasts on leadership topics, such as vision, communication, innovation, or ethics. You can find relevant and useful resources from organizations such as the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), or the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL).

3 Practice your skills

The third step to improving your leadership skills is to practice them. You can do this by taking on new responsibilities, projects, or roles that challenge you and require you to use your skills. For example, you can volunteer to lead a committee, mentor a new teacher , or organize a school event. You can also practice your skills by participating in professional development programs, workshops, or courses that focus on leadership development. You can look for opportunities from your school, district, or state, or from external providers, such as the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), the Teacher Leadership Institute (TLI), or the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

One of the most unexpected ways to gain leadership experience is to ask your administrator what job, project, role, or task has no one volunteered for. Maybe it's tedious, hard, complicated, or confusing. Do it anyway. It will be noticed that you stepped up to the plate. No pressure because no one else wanted to do it. You get to set the bar. Have fun with it, take it in a new and unexpected direction, bring people in. Surprise everyone with the results. Perhaps next year, there will be competition to lead the effort!

The fourth step to improving your leadership skills is to seek feedback and support. You can do this by asking for constructive and specific feedback from your colleagues, mentors, or supervisors on your performance, goals, or challenges. You can also seek feedback from your students, parents, or community members on how you can improve your teaching, learning, or service. The fifth step to improving your leadership skills is to keep learning and growing. You can do this by setting SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals for your leadership development and tracking your progress and achievements. You can attend conferences, webinars, or events that can expose you to new ideas, perspectives, or opportunities. You can also keep learning and growing by celebrating your successes, acknowledging your challenges, and embracing your failures as opportunities to learn and improve.

The sixth and final step to improving your leadership skills is to be authentic and ethical. You can also be authentic and ethical by being honest, transparent, and accountable for your actions, outcomes, and impacts. The best way to get started is to get started. If you're a teacher, look around and see if there are opportunities to get work done and help other teachers, or your site administration. Communicate that you're available and willing to oversee something, or administer something. For example, when I was a teacher, I volunteered to help with the senior survey (where every HS senior takes an online survey or post graduation plans). I created the survey, organized it, sent the info to the teachers, worked with the career lab technician, etc. This task was a real task that needed to be done, and the site administration was happy to delegate it. Yes, it did take my time, but it gave me an opportunity to administer something.

From personal experience, I think the best way to develop your leadership skills is to take on leadership roles within your school or district. That could look like any of the following: - joining your school’s instructional leadership team - volunteering to lead/facilitate a PD workshop for your colleagues - organizing a schoolwide event or field trip - taking on a union representative position for your school (if your school/district has a teacher union) At first, it can be uncomfortable but the more you immerse yourself in these roles, the more comfortable you’ll become. Mistakes are inevitable but they also serve as opportunities for growth.
