From a synthetic organometallic background myself, most new prospects in material science will be employing a lot of new synthetic routes so everything from organic, inorganic, computational, physical and analytical chemistry or preferably a well versed individual in all realms would be invaluable. A lot of new technology is a hybrid of computer science, chemistry, and engineering. Yoi need to be sound in all areas of STEM period, not just one.

I’ve found that understanding theoretical and experimental works best. You have to stay in top of literature, take classes to improve or keep tech skills relevent/top form, and for me, a knowledge of validation whether process or methodology is a huge advantage. Understanding these things helps with risk assessment, operations, etc. which can be invaluable to an employee and tgeir employer. Especially if looking to go into GMP processes (manufacturing) for product or process .

These tools also expedite in the design and analysis of chemical processes, and staying updated with the latest technology improves one's skill set in these processes.
