of course im not going to give you a cookie cutter answer. Dont volunteer for HR or anything like that, helping HR is what your supposed to do anyways. you do need to learn some HR functions and laws so you know when you as the recruiter needs to pass it to HR but unless you are wanting to become an HR person, i wouldnt bother over volunteering for HR. this is what you do. Volunteer to help candidates upgrade/write their resumes. Volunteer to help managers write job descriptions. volunteer to go to the job fair. volunteer to do your bosses work such as stat management. volunteer to sit in on company interviews. volunteer to stay late. volunteer to work other porgrams outside of the norm (im aviation but i need to learn IT).

This is the easiest way to see whether this might be for you. Go to an event with a recruiter. Watch them. Learn from them. Use their “nuggets.” At the end of the day were you energized by it or did it drain you? If energized, try being a campus lead or for a line of business. Volunteering gives you “at bats,” without the pressure to perform. You can try it out on your own terms.

If an organization is willing to teach you, empower you, ready to cowork with you to set your goals and challenges your ability to make you grow faster I would recommend that organization even though it’s a small organization. Moreover in small organizations the accessibility to key stakeholders holders will be not that challenging this one benefit can improve your ASK quotient to a greater extent and when you achieve in a small organization the sense of achievement will give you more pride and growth .

If I had to start from zero in recruitment today, I'd research recruitment companies working in a sector of growth and using the latest sourcing technologies, especially a small company where you can learn on the job, doing much more than data entry and admin jobs. You're more likely to gain valuable experience, a better salary and professional growth opportunities and support and mentorship in a smaller company.

While I didn't become a recruiter until ~10 years after I graduated, I did come to it feeling completely green. In order to get up to speed, I sat in on calls my more experienced coworkers were taking, signed up for newsletters and subscribed to forums in both the recruiting industry AND for the industry I was recruiting for, and took every call to get reps in. I can now be more discerning with all of the above, but when you are first starting out, it's helpful to consider yourself "a sponge" - absorb it all!
