Allow for Improvisation Flexibility: While you have a specific vision, be open to the models bringing their interpretation to the role. Sometimes their natural expressions can enhance the authenticity of the shoot. Experimentation: Allocate time for the models to try different expressions. This not only gives you a variety of options but can also lead to discovering unexpectedly perfect shots.

Expressions that resonate come from an exchange, not just descriptive language. Instead of instructing a model to “look happy” or “feel wistful,” guide them into moments — music, anecdotes, scenarios, or sensory cues that evoke the desired tone. Breaking the tension can be as simple as making them laugh. I once watched Annie Leibovitz’s assistant use a leaf blower to blow air in a subject’s face — not for the effect, but just to make them laugh and loosen up. It worked brilliantly. Treat the set as a conversation — i.e. adjust the energy to not only match, but amplify theirs. When the model feels part of the creative process — not just the subject — the expressions tend to take care of themselves, especially if you take a lot of photos.

I always start by sharing a vision board with the models I work with, showcasing examples of the facial expressions I’m aiming for. This sets the tone before I explain the story we’re trying to tell and the role they’ll embody within it. During the shoot, I use scenarios to help them step into character. For example: "Imagine you're looking at the camera like your ex is calling you drunk—again." It keeps things lighthearted and engaging while ensuring we capture the perfect mood

To ensure models' expressions align with your vision, communicate your concept clearly before the shoot and provide visual references or mood boards. Offer specific, positive feedback during the session and use prompts or scenarios to evoke desired emotions. Foster a relaxed and supportive atmosphere to help models feel confident, allowing their expressions to naturally reflect your creative direction.
