??If everyone on the planet lived like the population of Qatar, our Earth Overshoot Day would fall on February 11th - That's one and a half months into the year. ?? Earth Overshoot Day?marks the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. It's calculated by dividing the planet’s bio-capacity (the amount of ecological resources Earth is able to generate that year), by humanity’s Ecological Footprint (humanity’s demand for that year), and multiplying by 365, the number of days in a year (Source: Global Footprint Network). In 2024, our overall Earth Overshoot Day is expected to fall on July 25. In 2023, Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 2. We can't deny that we're operating in overshoot. ???? If Germany keeps moving in the direction it does so now, it would face an early Overshoot day on May 2nd, with many other European countries falling in May also. ?? Today on Earth Day, we must reminder ourselves of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, focusing on us taking action now for a healthier planet and a sustainable future. ?? Earth Overshoot Day 2024 Falls on August 1st ?? As every year on June 5th, the Global Footprint Network has announced Earth Overshoot Day 2024. This year, Earth Overshoot Day falls on August 1st, the same as in 2018 and 2022. Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity's demand for ecological resources exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. The earlier this date, the more resources humanity consumes. What must we do to push Earth Overshoot Day later in the year and ultimately prevent it from occurring? 1. Stop climate change 2. Stop biodiversity loss 3. Stop pollution and overuse of freshwater reserves 4. Stop air pollution 5. Stop overuse of land resources 6. Regenerate oceans Many natural reserves are long-term damaged, so we need to regenerate them. We must shift from a degenerative to a nature-positive lifestyle – in politics, in business, and in society. The last time humanity used fewer resources than the Earth could regenerate was in 1970. The German one is on May 2, while the Swiss Overshoot Day is on May 27 (NB: No info available for Iceland). ? ? ? As of August 1st, we're using nature 1.7 times faster than our planet's ecosystems can replenish. ? Although Earth Overshoot Day has held steady for a decade, it remains early in the year, occurring just after 7 months of the year have passed. The remainder of the year humanity lives from overuse, further depleting the biosphere. Therefore, even as the date holds steady, the pressure on the planet keeps increasing, since damage from overshoot accumulates over time. ?
