It's easy to say that planning for budget cuts BEFORE they need to happen is the best path. But, that doesn't always happen. Identify the programs that are the most successful (enrollment, alignment with jobs, etc) through a process that involves faculty from across campus (not just those programs). Be transparent about the criteria used to identify cuts and engage faculty as much as possible. Then, once the decisions have been made, communicate them quickly and clearly. Don't forget to also inform your accreditor(s) and other funders -- they shouldn't hear about it second-hand. Provide job searching support for those faculty/staff who are impacted and transfer information for students in those programs.

Amid budget cuts, universities can prioritize academic quality by leveraging affordable educational technology like OER and AI-based tools. Collaborative teaching across disciplines reduces hiring needs while enriching learning. Class sizes can be optimized, increasing only for non-core subjects. Investing in faculty training on innovative, low-cost teaching methods ensures student engagement. Partnerships with local businesses offer hands-on, cost-effective learning experiences. These strategies maintain academic standards while maximizing limited resources.

Academic quality is integral to the higher education institution's strategy and success. However, the strategy must "get felt" throughout the institution so that decision-makers know when a severe budget cut could impact quality. Internal communication interventions, including vertical slice of stakeholder workshops, are essential for new ways of thinking regarding this dilemma.

Focus resources on programs with high demand, strong outcomes, and alignment with the university's mission. Consolidate or phase out programs with low enrollment or questionable long-term viability.

Navigating tough budget choices in academia requires strategic thinking and prioritisation to maintain educational excellence. It’s essential to focus on aligning resources with core institutional goals, ensuring that student success and academic quality remain at the forefront. Streamlining processes, fostering partnerships, and leveraging technology can also help maximize the impact of limited resources. By making thoughtful, data-driven decisions and engaging stakeholders, we can uphold the high standards of education even in challenging financial times.
