Most people would recommend you define everything early in the development process in order to get through design cleanly. This is wrong. It generally takes months or years to design and develop a new product. The fastest way is to have the "guardrails" but to hold critical decisions as late in the process as you can. For Example, do not do the final color and packaging development before it is necessary to meet launch timelines. This way you can take advantage of the very latest trends, and not have trend changes cause you to make last minute changes - which frequently introduce delays, quality problems and drive costs up.

As we've shared, to go fast in product development you must have a clear strategic intent, and you must make critical decisions as close to launch as you have to. However in order to accomplish this, you must know the sequence such that you know how late you can make decisions. It is more difficult and disciplined to go fast, but it results in more customer centric products in the long run.
