When I first joined the industry I was lacking coding skills because I came from a statistics and mathematics background. I was afraid I remember, But I knew that I’m good with statistics and Data analysis. I knew what to do and what decisions to make. These strengths made me confident in my role. I then took time to learn coding on the job, it was hard but eventually it got easier and I became good at coding too. But identifying my strengths helped me to showcase my potential and to make people believe in my work.

In my opinion, buckle up and take up new and challenging projects, learn a new skill that would be relevant in your stream, contribute to open source like Kaggle, GitHub, guide others will make your concepts stronger, read some research papers, network with people of your domain, attend workshops/meetups to expose yourself to different perspectives, challenges and solutions, and the most important thing- "Embrace Failure as a Leaning Opportunity"

Back in 2016 , when I started my career as a fresher in the analytics domain , I was very new to coding and naturally was scared if I could survive. I was good at statistics. Luckily, I started with a business analytics use case , and the insights I generated from simple descriptive analytics , got the attention of the VP himself. The praises I received from him really boosted my confidence . Later on I picked up python coding in 2 months. So it's all in our head , if we can do something or not . If your fundamental concepts are clear in statistics, then you can survive in this industry no matter what tool or language you have to use . An analytical mind is all you need. Good luck .

Overconfidence and certainty associated with this kind of confidence is a greater risk and weakness. Embrace critical thinking and grow courage to ask the questions that communicate the uncertainties. Pursue the answers to these questions, as this may take you further than you may realize. There is yet a lot unknown and undiscovered.

In my experience, if I feel uncertain about technical skills, I usually start by searching on Google for reliable sources to learn from. I am not the type of person who trusts experiments blindly. Instead, I try to understand the basic concepts behind the implementation and why we need it. I also look for easy ways to reduce errors. Once I have gathered all the necessary information, I consult my seniors or supervisors to validate my assumptions and conclusions. Developing soft skills takes time and opportunities, but once you gain confidence in yourself and your team/friends, you will be able to seize opportunities as they arise. Remember that opportunities don't come around all the time, so take advantage of them when you can.

Embracing weaknesses is the first step towards working on them and making them in to strengths. If one is feeling uncertain or low on confidence then I would strongly urge you to take up a kaggle use case and dedicate half an hour or so everyday for a few weeks or a few hours over a few weekends to practice and follow the use cases to learn. These days chatgpt is also there to help with coding or reading up on any topic. I think polishing your strengths and dedicating time to embrace weaknesses will trigger your brain to feel more confident over a period of time.

Coming from a non-technical background with a degree in Physics and Mathematics as my minors, my shift toward becoming a Data Scientist required starting from the ground up. I began my journey by diving into YouTube lectures, reading various blogs and articles on platforms like Medium and Towards Data Science. To enhance my skills, I pursued courses on Coursera and Udemy. Continuous learning remains a pivotal part of my journey as I strive to expand my knowledge and expertise in the field.

Identifying & Accepting your limitations are very important no matter in which field you are . Best way to do that would be seeking timely feedback from you seniors or even peers . There is no shame in asking for feedback or help if you need it . If you can't move the mountain alone , it's always better to ask for help . That's the only way to success . Also at the same time would encourage for skill upgrade and go for knowledge sharing sessions.

Embrace Continuous Learning: Data Science and it related topics may seem to be huge and never ending but when you try to learn one topic at a time will give you confidence and firm grip on data science domain. Allocate time for learning, whether it's through online courses, webinars, reading research papers, or participating in forums like Kaggle. Work on Personal Projects: Personal projects can serve as a portfolio to showcase your abilities and can be a great tool to explore different practical problems which you won't heard in theory. Collaborate and Network: Engage with the data science community. Join local meetups, online groups. Sharing ideas and receiving feedback can help you.

One trick that I use is to give myself positive feedback when I achieve something. Depending on the achievement, this feedback can vary—from going out and having a nice meal with loved ones to buying something meaningful for myself to celebrate that accomplishment. By employing this positive feedback technique, you are programming your brain to always strive for rewards, benefiting yourself both mentally and physically! ????♂?

It's always important to give something back to the people( Next YOU). Remember we all seek help and look for examples , when we got stuck somewhere . So it's always our responsibility to share our breakthroughs and wins and even losses by documenting it , perhaps in a knowledge repository . This will help others to learn from your experience and the cycle will continue .

Even the smallest achievement matters. In my opinion celebrating your achievements helps in boosting confidence. This confidence will be the fuel for hardwork.

Get yourself out of that comfort zone! Take up new challenges, new adventures and use them as learning moments. Do something you haven't done before...and keep doing more.

One thing I’ve found helpful is to set a big goal of something that I want to achieve and then break it down into smaller goals. This makes the big goal feel less overwhelming and completing the smaller goals feel more rewarding.

The most dangerous place in this world is your ' comfort zone' as it kills your creative mind slowly . Technology will always be changing at a rapid rate . If you fail to keep up the speed , you will perish one day . So always upgrade your skills . We all know what happened to the company "Kodak " as it failed to embrace 'change' . Change is the only constant in life. So the urge of " doing better " should always stay with you .

"Learning from others " is a very important step in your professional journey. There is no shame in admitting that someone knows more than me or someone is better at something than myself . I have seen people simply don't ask for peers review just because of their ego . If you take timely feedback from your peers as well as Seniors, that will eventually going to help you only .

Echoing Bruce Lee’s saying, I believe it’s more formidable to face someone who has masters one kick a 1000 times than someone who knows 1000 different kicks. This idea holds true for data scientists too. Learning from others pivotal. Let’s say you are sitting in math class and trying to solve a question. You may have your own way of approaching it, but suddenly your friend shows you a different method that’s faster and more efficient. Similarly in the world of data science learning from others is like discovering a new problem solving strategy. It not only broadens your skills but also opens up different way to tackle issue.

I always follow this : "leave it better than you found it" and it works for everything, your knowledge, tools and experience as well. Being a data scientist I keep on reading a lot of research papers and that's where new process/techniques come from.

It is important to consider that 'Data Science is just a sweet spot between statistics, coding and domain expertise. A classic definition of a data scientist which I often quote is : " A data scientist is a person who knows more statistics than a coder and knows more coding than a statiscian ! ". Hence, it is not necessary that you have to gain high levels of expertise either in Math or coding to become a good data scientist. As long as you are able to understand a problem statement and break it down into small logical chunks, then you can pick up the necessary "tools" for solving the problem accordingly. Just see coding, statistics, domain knowledge, presentation etc, just as "tools" to solve your data science problem and learn it !!

A good way to to quickly build up confidence as a Data Scientist is to take a few softballs. What that phrase means is to take on a project or two that is well within your knowledge base and won’t take a lot of your time or resources. You will most likely crush the projects; leading to a renewed sense of confidence. That momentum you’ve created should carry over as a confidence booster when preparing to tackle more challenging projects. Go back to the basics! The lack of confidence, I’ve found, can be attributed to the lack of preparedness. Really dig into the subject matter and learn all you can about it. Remember to follow your processes and refresh your knowledge. Look at previous projects and notes. Do what you must to be prepared.
