When Data Science was a new sector (back in early 2010s) the barrier to entry was much lower, all you needed was the skillset and awareness of the technologies. With the field maturing educational backgrounds are becoming more and more important, Having a Masters Degree or PhD genuinely helps getting that first foot into the field unless you've extensive experience in the IT sector before. In terms of experience, the most important part is to dive into specialties of AI, ensuring you increase your skillset in a specific sector of AI (NLP, computer vision, causal AI etc) as well as being ahead with the latest developments though reading research papers , attending workshops and meetups where possible.

In my known circle, Data Scientists with a Bachelor's degree can expect an average salary starting from $88,151-$93,553. Data Scientists with a Master's degree can expect to earn between $100,000 to $126,830 per year. Data Scientists with a PhD can earn anywhere between $90,000 to $180,000 per year. It can vary now, just approximation.

While I'm not personally aware of data Science salaries depending purely on what tools you know, the more important part are the skills. What separates a good data scientist Vs a great one, and a senior from a junior in my perspective is their ability to convert complex business problems into data driven solutions, as well as being able to explain and quantify the impact of data driven solutions to the business. This is what crucially separates a senior/ lead data scientist from a junior, along with the typical expected skills of mentorship. Another thing that ensures you'd stay at the top of the field is being updated with research. Read and understand impact of landmark papers and incorporate it in your work where possible.

Proficiency in key data science skills such as programming (e.g., Python, R), statistics, machine learning, data visualization, and data manipulation is highly valued in the industry. Familiarity with popular tools and frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and SQL can also influence salary potential.

Location based variations in salaries while important do not actually mean higher earning potential when considering all other factors. Compare the cost based on average cost of living, and also advancement possibilities in the sector in that region (for example med-tech vs finance) On a more important note, unless its the exact role in 2 different regions, in a field as vast as data science, the more important deciding factor for a role should be your fit with what the team is doing (i.e the specialisation) as well as the organisational values itself. For example if you're a research driven data scientist, you'd prefer working in more scientific settings than more implementational settings.

Salaries in Data Science depends highly on your knowledge, as well as your soft skills.
