When ideas are flowing, interruptions can derail productivity. Here's how to maintain momentum without losing your temper:
- Set clear ground rules at the beginning about how and when to interject.
- Use a "parking lot" to note tangential ideas for later discussion.
- Politely but firmly steer the conversation back on track if derailed.

Establish a structured agenda, ensure everyone knows topics and time limits, and designate a facilitator. Implement the “one voice at a time” rule, use visual cues for interruptions, and encourage active listening. Schedule short breaks to reset energy and focus.

This came up in a recent brainstorming session I was leading, where constant interruptions started to derail our focus. I felt the tension rise but knew reacting defensively would only make it worse. When another interruption occurred, I followed four key steps: Acknowledge their contribution (“I appreciate your input”), Validate their emotions (“I can see this is important to you”), Guide the conversation back (“Let’s finish this point to stay on track”), and Reassure them we’d revisit their idea later. This not only eased the tension, but when we revisited their idea at the right time, it sparked valuable discussion. By managing the situation calmly, I ensured the session stayed productive and the team felt heard.

Brainstorming is a very organic process of coming up with innovative and efficeint strategies. Interruptions can lead to conflicts but at the same time what you need to differentiate as a team leader or manager is if someone is interrupting with an intent of hindering the brainstorming session or do they genuinely have very interesting points to contibute. Because, even though interruptions can be time consuming and irritating, sometimes these can be a source of finding out great ideas!
