You’re considering a summer internship in Computer-Aided Design (CAD). How can you make the most of it?

I will be working professionally on the PTC Creo software field of interest and have good knowledge of developing designs to build it.

Also be aware that many companies work in certain CAD programs in particular. There are many similar CAD programs so you might need to spend the beginning of your internship familiarizing yourself with whatever program the company you are interning at uses.

For me SolidWorks is a powerful CAD tool with numerous features and capabilities. Spend time during your internship familiarizing yourself with the software if you're not already proficient. Learn keyboard shortcuts, explore different commands, and practice creating complex designs.

Start with basic knowledge. Ask your mentor for some feedback and ideas. Also there are many different CAD programs available, each with its own features, functions, and formats. Depending on your field of interest and the type of projects you'll be working on, you should choose a program that suits your needs and goals. For example if you're from an electrical and electronics background it means you can choose PCB design. If you're a Mechanical background you can choose Auto CAD, Solid works, ProE. And dipping on your interest.

If you’re beginning a career in CAD design, ask lots of questions! I have found most other designers are more than willing to share their knowledge and expertise. You are going to learn way more on the job than you will in the classroom, and the lessons are going to be much more practical.

To make the most of a summer internship in CAD, prioritize learning the basics of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) along with engineering drawings. Understanding these fundamentals will enhance your ability to interpret and create precise technical drawings, crucial in CAD. This is what I did when I wanted to start my CAD career. I gave myself a target of 2 weeks to learn the basics. This is of course going to be different for different people due to level of assimilation. But try not to exceed 4 weeks to learn the basics. After that, continue learning per topic or problems. That way, your growth rate would shock you.

Don't hesitate to ask questions and seek guidance from mentors or more experienced colleagues. They can provide valuable insights and tips to help you overcome challenges and improve your skills.

Feedback is important. You can either receive that from a mentor. If you are doing self-taught projects, it is useful to compare your results to how other people did it. Real life experience of using CAD such as Internship is the best way to become adept in CAD. During internships, you should try to learn about the industrial approach for designing a project. This will help in making your design process more efficient and effective. You should also use this opportunity to clarify various doubts that might not be available in the existing online resources.

For me,engage in CAD design competitions or challenges to test your skills against others and showcase your abilities. Competitions such as design challenges hosted by SolidWorks user groups or engineering organizations provide opportunities to push yourself and gain recognition for your work.

This is the right mindset for everyone at any point. There is always more to learn and new ways to grow. If you're truly interested in becoming better then ask to take on new challenges. There is no growth in the comfort zone and there's no comfort in the growth zone. If you're comfortable with everything you're doing you've stopped progressing in your career and need to make a change (or wait out those last few years till retirement). The need to grow may be most evident when viewed from the perspective of an intern or recent grad, but it never goes away as long as you have an interest in becoming better and being able to do more.

Do what you think you cannot do, a software is garbage in garbage out, think of it as a tool and building materials and you have to build this concept using the tools and materials at hand.

I was going to chose the option of challenging yourself because you get to make more mistakes and learning by mistakes is one of the best ways of sticking the knowledge in your longterm memory. However, considering the market now a days, (500 people applying to 1 position) it is so crucial to make a strong network with others to get your way into the company!

Alright, while the learning opportunities from an internship can't be overstated, from a career perspective networking is easily the most important. The reality is leveraging an internship into a full time job post graduation is very valuable long term. The hardest job to land is the first one.

It is always helpful to network with a group that shares experiences and answers questions you may have. CAD can be very much fun once you feel confident. Learn to set up templates and title/blocks and borders. Make the best of it and enjoy your creative time.

Attend workshops and conferences. 5. Work with colleagues on projects. 6. Be genuine and proactive in conversations. 7. Follow up with new connections. 8. Offer help and share resources.

Best way in learning is collaborative effort in learning. It can be feasible only by networking opportunities and through attending conferences and participation in hackathons.

Actually when I first started using CAD and subsequently transitioned to MEPF and the use of Revit it was invaluable to go on site visits to see how things were built, installed and how it could differ from the initial design.

Beyond just the basic skills and how to CAD, try to think about experience you are gaining in terms of how you are using CAD to solve problems and what the applications are. Also try to learn more about how your coworkers use CAD and if they have any special tips and tricks to make things easier.

We no longer draw lines with computers we build buildings and until students learn how buildings are built by having a on the job site experience actually building a building will we have graduates ready.
