You're considering showcasing your diverse skill set. Is a functional resume format the right choice for you?
Switching careers or have a varied background? A functional resume format can showcase your diverse skill set. To decide if it's for you:
- Assess your work history. If it's non-linear or you're changing fields, a functional resume can emphasize skills over dates.
- Identify transferable skills. Highlight abilities applicable to the job you want, not just those from past roles.
- Tailor it to the job description. Use keywords from the job posting to align your resume with employer needs.

A functional resume can work if you’re transitioning careers or addressing gaps, but it’s often less favored by recruiters. Instead, opt for a hybrid format that highlights your skills while maintaining a clear work history. Start with a strong summary and key skills section, followed by concise, achievement-focused job entries. This approach ensures your diverse skill set stands out while keeping the structure recruiter-friendly and impactful.

Functional Resumes are not favored by recruiters nor ATS. I've prepared resumes for tens of career shifters and none of them was a functional resume. The idea is to highlight skills and how they can be transferred to your target job. From my experience you can go out of the box and work smarter using the traditional formatting and get better results in this job market.

Call me crazy -- old fashioned even -- but I don't recommend a functional resume, ever. The hard truth is this -- a resume is marketing. And since a hiring manager is expecting a chronological resume, the functional resume comes across as 'this person is hiding something.' *But* there are ways to refocus your reader without planting this doubt in their mind. Try a Career Highlights section at the top of your resume so you can cherry pick relevant *wins* that align with the role Then continue the document with a chronology. Or, include an addendum with 'functional skills' or relevant project work. And remember, it's natural to choose a new career path -- call it out and explain the 'value' you intend to make in this new field.

A functional resume format is ideal for emphasizing your skills and qualifications over a chronological work history, making it particularly beneficial for career changers focusing on transferable skills, individuals with employment gaps seeking to de-emphasize career breaks, and those wanting to highlight a strong skill set as the centerpiece of their qualifications, but it’s crucial to include enough work experience details to maintain a clear career narrative, as many employers favor chronological resumes for their straightforward career progression.
