1 Your skills and interests

Product R&D requires a combination of technical, creative, and analytical skills. You need to be able to research and understand customer problems, generate and prototype ideas, experiment and validate solutions, and communicate and collaborate with different stakeholders. You also need to be curious, adaptable, and willing to learn from failures. Think about your strengths and weaknesses, and how they align with the specific requirements and expectations of the product R&D job you're considering. Do you have the relevant knowledge, experience, and qualifications? Do you enjoy the type of work and challenges involved? Do you share the vision and values of the organization?

When considering a new R&D role, I first compare the company's needs and my experience. If there is significant overlap, then I consider myself a good fit. I then look at my interests and compare them to the company's needs. If they align, then I know I'll be motivated to do a good job. Next, if there are requirements that I don't yet fulfill in the new role, this means I'll have a growth opportunity with the company. I tend to seek roles where I am 80% qualified; this tends to be a good balance between immediate value added to the company and professional growth opportunities. Finally, the company culture must align with my values. If the company is a "work hard play hard" type with no balance, this will clash with my goals and values.

2 The product and industry

Product R&D is not a one-size-fits-all field. Different products and industries have different goals, standards, regulations, and trends. For example, product R&D in healthcare might involve more safety, compliance, and ethical issues than product R&D in entertainment. You need to have a good understanding of the product and industry you're applying for, and how they fit your interests and goals. Do some research on the product's features, benefits, customers, competitors, and market potential. How does it solve a real problem or create value? How does it stand out from other products in the same category? How does it align with your passions and aspirations?

In addition, comprehensively grasping the product, including its features, functionality, and target market is crucial in identifying areas for improvement, innovation and differentiation. Understanding the industry of operation provides insight into market trends, consumer preferences, regulatory requirements and competitive landscapes. This approach ultimately allows one to align product development efforts with industry dynamics and consumer demands, enable organisations to enhance their competitiveness, become innovative and deliver products that meet and exceed customer expectations.

3 The team and culture

Product R&D is not a solo endeavor. You'll be working with a team of other product R&D professionals, as well as cross-functional partners from engineering, marketing, sales, and other departments. You need to be able to work well with others, respect different perspectives, and contribute to a positive and productive culture. Find out more about the team and culture of the product R&D department you're applying for, and how they match your personality and preferences. How is the team structured, organized, and managed? How do they communicate, collaborate, and make decisions? How do they handle feedback, conflict, and change? How do they balance innovation, quality, and speed?

One can balance innovation, quality, and speed by cultivating a culture of accountability and transparency. A team must understand that it's their responsibility to transcend more words and take meaningful action. A team must have a culture of going beyond crafting eloquent strategies and promises, and actively pursue integrity, innovation and sustainability in all aspects of their work. This entails a team that adheres to delivering on commitments and continuously striving for improvement. By embracing accountability and transparency we can truly go beyond the words and drive meaningful changes and improvements.

Product R&D can be rewarding, but also demanding and stressful. You need to consider the compensation and benefits of the product R&D job you're considering, and how they compare to your needs and expectations. Compensation and benefits can include salary, bonuses, stock options, health insurance, retirement plans, vacation time, and other perks. How do they reflect your skills, experience, and performance? How do they compare to the industry average and your current or previous jobs? How do they support your financial and personal goals?
