PE firms often scoop up talent from top banks or consultancies. But here's the twist: you can also enter from business schools, industry backgrounds, or other financial sectors. Show them you've got the skills to amp up their game – be it in tech know-how, industry smarts, or killer networking. As the Group Treasurer of a UK plc I was involved in an acquisition of a US Corp which changed the fundamental strategy of the Uk plc. I reviewed the US Board Minutes which told me that a PE firm had bought and funded a significant amount of equity and bolt on acquisitions with the view to exit within three years. Great experience and respect for the insight of the PE as opposed to the Investment Banker who charged 3% for the advice that we could issue equity or debt. Nobody told me that 40 years ago when I studied eight years to qualify as a Chartered Accountant and Corporate Treasurer.

It’s not that bad at all. Know your industry, surround yourself with experts, have a good DD team and buy at the right vintage. Not when everyone is buying. Then make sure you not only have a good management but also a great leader in the business you bought in. If you have doubts don’t wait! Don’t be greedy when you are selling. Watch your targeted multiple and adjust if you can afford it. There is always some luck needed but with discipline, patience and systematic thinking you’ll make great returns.
