It goes without saying that instructional design is important. However, we often forget that it is not one and done. Instructional design needs to be an iterative process. We make a variety of assumptions at the beginning of our designs. We may assume that our target learners are more knowledgeable about X than Y. But after testing with actual learners we may find out differently. This could cause us to adjust our content. For me, it is important that you build testing and evaluation as a part of your design process. We do not always have the best ideas in the first design. We need to set up time to iterate on our instructional design process and work flexibly so we do not get locked into a particular method or chase the latest fad.

You could put together a slick video, a fun blog, and some snazzy pictures. But is this really helping the learner? Or is it just adding eye candy that is more distracting than helpful? Sometimes we don't know. So, it is important to test the content not against learner satisfaction, but against whether the learner understands and can apply the material at work.

Project Management is a skill that is often seen as lacking in people whom I have worked with in learning and development. Nothing breaks trust faster than saying you will deliver training on X day and then being super late about it. Further, upper management tends not to understand the time it takes to design and deliver effective training. If you use project management terms and methods they are used to you can better communicate the progress and get the breathing room you need. In addition, it is a good idea to know when to use waterfall (for more predictable projects) and agile (when learning requirements, target learners, etc are less well known).
